Q: What about your Big Picture books? What are they about?

Oh, they're really small novellette pocket-books from which I take sections of text for my recordings. They have their own creative life, but I do essentially write them to live alongside the music.

But my "Big Picture" books are anything but big: they're small format, few pages, tiny illustrations, little plot, but always big ideas that contain elements of the Big Picture, each like a miniature totality...

"I am not greedy. I do not wish to take up the bulk of your time. I am content if, only every once in a great while, your inner-most thoughts may take the form of my images." -Maya Deren

"What we demand is a unity of politics and art...the unity of content and form...the unity of revolutionary content and the highest perfection of artistic form. We must, in literature and art, carry on a struggle on two fronts." -Jean Luc Godard

"In the times of bigness, spectaculars, one hundred million dollar movie productions, I want to speak for the small, invisible acts of human spirit, so subtle that they die when brought out under the lights. I am for art which we do for each other as friends, for ourselves." -Jonas Mekas
